February is an anticipated month of the year. It is a time when people in every institution  express their love and affection in any way possible.

LIFE-Cebu celebrated the Love Month, in the observance of Valentine’s Day, through a series of activities slated from February 4 to February 15. These activities were as follows:

  • Freedom Wall. This wall served as the venue for the management, staff, teachers, and students express their feelings through mutual posting of cards, letters, or love notes.
  • Trivia Questions tested the students’ general knowledge on clips about love which were posted daily.
  • Card Making Contest. Students can use many creative techniques and supplies to come up with a handmade valentine’s card for their teachers and loved ones. This competition also encouraged students to display their talents in art and writing.
  • Blind Date. An interactive game slated as the highlight of the culminating day of the Love Month, 2 pairs of participants earned for themselves free dinner for two prize at The Port Restaurant, Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino at Salinas Drive, Cebu City.

The Art of Questioning Seminar

ayenpix-121.jpg

March 8, 2008 proved to be another productive date for many of LIFE Cebu academic professionals. A talk on the “Art of Questioning” by Cebu Normal University’s (CNU) Associate Dean of College of Teacher Education Dr. Reynaldo Inocian provided additional insights on how should teachers perform as facilitators of knowledge.

As an English teacher specifically teaching language and literature, we are expected to be a jack of all trades. We are not only expected to be masters of grammar and linguistics, but are also looked upon as source of trivial information and current events.

To facilitate a discussion is not merely asking any questions that pops-up from the teacher’s mind. For true educator questioning is a process with HIERARCHICHAL nature.

Many teachers are still blinded with this significant fact. No wonder many students suffer one-dimensional syndrome in sharing their ideas because the educators in-charged for their academic growth were unable to tap their full critical-thinking skills.

Lessons are like food that we take to make us healthy. Hungry minds must be fed and nurtured. With just knowledge and comprehension levels of questioning embarked in class, students are expected to malnourish.

Students should be exposed to higher level of questioning. This move will shape them to grow as better individuals. Questions or problems given should encourage them to use their present knowledge and ideas in a new setting. Integrating values of the lesson is a crucial key to find its meaning and authenticity.

We are glad that this seminar imbued us with great insights on how powerful the Art of Questioning is. Systematic usage of this process can definitely provide holistic approach in attaining the student’s full critical-thinking skills.
